Was the scanner a "generic" scanner? Most "code readers" will only display powertrain codes, that is the P0xxx format codes, whereas the problem you're having with the dash display is probably "body" related which is usually Cxxxx codes or Uxxxx codes if it's network related. You'd need either the factory scan tool or a professional aftermarket scanner that supports instrument panel, body computer, etc. besides powertrain. Those are made by OTC, Snap-on, Autel, etc. Lots of choices out there but none of them are cheap by DIY standards, so you won't find a $100 one.
